Another bouquet arrived from my husband, this one chosen as usual by the owners of the flower farm and therefore different from the last. Two large, pale roses sit quietly at the center, their cream petals almost still against the brighter yellows, oranges, magentas, and deep greens crowding around them. The contrast felt immediate—the roses seemed to hold a calm that the surrounding color could not interrupt. I painted them because that quiet opposition was the most interesting thing in the arrangement: the pale blooms neither competing with nor yielding to the livelier flowers, simply remaining themselves.
